JLC stands for the Joy Luck Club, a reference to the 1993 film of the same name, which was in turn based on San Franciscan Amy Tan's best-selling 1989 book. In that film, four Chinese women and their daughters grow closer through sharing their lives through weekly mah-jongg games. In our version, our mah-jong get-togethers were an excuse to cook and eat various asian cuisines and, of course....GOSSIP!!!
The four of us began playing mah-jongg together in early fall of 2000, a few months before I moved away from San Francisco. In mah-jongg, the four players are sometimes referred to as the four directions, or the four winds. We chose our directions based on our geographic location relative to one another: pachooey was East, Aldur01 was South, claudeSF was West, and I was North. When I moved back to Toronto at the end of October 2000, I simply became...Far North.
