I first visited the Waipio valley (where King Kamehameha I was raised, according to what I was told) on a tour some years ago with my Tante Thora and Onkel Gunnar. So, I thought, since it was on our way, that showing this valley to Dan, Muffy and Sean would be worthwhile. We didn't really spend that much time there - just long enough to take a look from the lip of the valley, and shoot some pictures. The principal reason we didn't drive down in there ourselves can be seen on the two signs we saw at the top...
Beautiful as it is, it's a dangerous place to live because of tsunamis - "tidal waves." They hit the coastline, and then rush into this narrow, nearly sea level valley with twice as much force, flattening or drowning everything in sight. There are still some taro farmers who live down there, and there is a tsunami warning siren at the top of the bluffs where we were looking from, but...
